Why Is My Business Not Showing Up on Google?
There are usually only a handful of reasons a business is invisible on Google, and most of them are fixable in weeks. Here they are, ranked by how often we see them.
You search your own trade and suburb, and your competitors are all there. You are not. Somebody is getting the work that search represents, and it is not you.
The good news is that this problem is rarely mysterious. The causes below cover almost every case of a business not showing up on Google that comes across our desk, ranked roughly by how often we see them. Every one of them comes from real, recent work, and most are fixable in weeks, not months.
1. There is no website, or the website is a Facebook page. Google can rank a Facebook page, but poorly, and you are competing against businesses with real sites full of the words customers search for. We took on a newly purchased business this year that was trading on Facebook alone, with no real display of its services anywhere. Invisible is the default in that position.
2. Your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or bare. For "plumber near me" searches, the map results dominate the page, and they are driven by your Google Business Profile, not your website. An unclaimed, unverified or empty profile takes you out of the local results entirely. This is the single highest-value fix on this list, and it costs nothing but time.
3. The site is gone, or Google cannot reach it. Hosting lapses, domains expire, and sites silently vanish. We have had a client discover this the hard way: everything lost to lapsed hosting, and every ranking with it. If your site is down, Google removes you, and the longer it is down the more you lose.
4. The site exists but is invisible to Google. No sitemap submitted, indexing never requested, or a stray setting blocking search engines, which is a surprisingly common leftover from whoever built it. Type site:yourdomain.com.au into Google: if nothing comes back, Google does not know your site exists.
5. The site says nothing worth ranking. One page, a logo, a phone number and "quality service you can trust". Google ranks pages that answer searches. If you do not have a page about each service you offer, in the words a customer would use, you are not in the running for those searches.
6. You are competing for the wrong term. Nobody outranks national directories for "electrician Australia" from a standing start. "Level 2 electrician Penrith" is a search you can actually win. Visibility starts local and specific.
That is the honest list. Work down it in order before you pay anyone, because the first two fixes are free and the third is a hosting bill. What follows is how to diagnose which one is yours, and what we do about the rest.
How to work out which one is yours
Fifteen minutes, three checks, no tools you have to buy:
Search your business name. If your own name does not bring you up, you are in causes 1 to 4: Google either cannot find you or cannot index you. Check site:yourdomain.com.au next to split it further.
Search your trade plus suburb in a private window. If you appear for your name but not your trade, you are in causes 2, 5 or 6: Google knows you exist but has no reason to show you for the searches that bring in work.
Look at who does show up. Open the top three local results. Count their pages, look at their Google Business Profiles, read their reviews. That is the standard you are being measured against, and it is usually less intimidating than owners expect.
What fixing it properly looks like
Every website we ship comes with the boring, invisible plumbing already done: an optimised Google Business Profile, a sitemap submitted to Google, local schema so search engines understand what and where you are, and page titles and descriptions on every page. Not as an upsell, as the baseline. The six live sites we have written up all left the building with it, because shipped work is a better argument than anything I could claim.
That baseline is what our website design and build service delivers, and if your existing site is the problem, your website is losing you work covers the symptoms in more detail. If you are weighing up what a proper rebuild costs, the honest numbers are in how much a website costs for a small business in Australia.
And if you would rather hand the diagnosis to someone: this is bread-and-butter work for NXT Innings. We will tell you which of the six causes is yours, and if the fix is the free kind, we will tell you that too.
